Prague

One of our favourite cities in EuropePrague has got history and character oozing out of every corner. Many may consider it “touristy” but its beauty is undeniable. We hope to share our favourite spots in this amazing city with our dear readers. Our hope is also to ease some of the logistical headaches that could come with the overwhelming amount of things to see and do.

We were lucky to find a very affordable spot right in front of Prague Main Station so our commute from and to this city was very easy and stress free. I would highly suggest also finding a place of accommodation in this area as transport is easy and a lot to see is easily walkable.

Prague Recommendations

Go Get a Chimney Cake – yes, its a very touristy thing to do. You’ll find many chains and shops and stalls selling chimney cakes throughout the city. I’d recommend just finding a popular chain as a start and see what you like. They offer it in many different flavours and combinations; anywhere from simple to monstrosity. Due to my sweet tooth, it’s one of my favourite things to have.

Prague Castle – Sitting on the other side of the river of the old town, Prague Castle is an iconic place to visit. It is rich with beauty and history. This area comes highly recommended and I would suggest in buying a pass. It is free to walk its streets but to enter one of the many exhibitions, a pass or ticket is required. It is a bit pricey but the pass that we bought on site lasted 2 days so we did not have to cram everything all in the same day. Nonetheless, a great time is to be had in the Prague Castle and I would highly recommend visiting.

Golden Lane – is a narrow street in the castle grounds where guards, residents, peasants and much more used to reside. Its rich history is in full display and brings a great insight into how life must have been like living within the castle walls as a normal average person. In time, the uses of this alleyway has changed but it still remains today as a great place to visit in the castle. If you’re into the author Kafka, this is the place to be.

St. Vitus CathedralA marvelous cathedral in the middle of the castle grounds stands mighty and tall. The St. Vitus Cathedral is a place of baroque beauty. Outside, it is an ornamental and elaborate masterpiece – inside, it is is an outstanding feat of human artistry.

Old Royal Palace – A bit unassuming from the outside but this old royal palace gives a wonderful insight as to how some of the higher ups and royalty lived during its time. It is a great place to learn about the history of the city and the castle itself. Turns out, it is also a great place to learn a new word – according to Wikipedia, “Defenestration is the act of throwing someone or something out of a window. The term was coined around the time of an incident in Prague Castle in the year 1618 which became the spark that started the Thirty Years’ War.”

South Gardens of Prague Castle – the perfect place in the castle grounds to have a nice, relaxing hang out. One may find inside the castle walls to be a bit loud, chaotic and busy. The South Gardens provide the perfect spot to get away from all of it. Better yet, it has the perfect vantage point to have an encompassing view of the city and the red roofs nearby. Bring a tea, a coffee, some snacks and slow down life at the South Gardens.

Charles Bridge is an extremely popular tourist attraction in the city. It is a historic and beautiful brick and stone bridge that is home to elaborate statues. These statues have left a lasting impression on me – it really feels like a part of the human soul was captured and still remains deep inside every stone figure. Or I’m just tripping. Nonetheless, it is still worth the visit but it gets quite busy.

Art Cafe 14 – Right across the bridge is a very popular tourist street filled with shops, dining, and entertainment. It goes without saying that it can get very noisy, chaotic and loud. However, this street hides an unassuming garden cafe full of art, serene peaceful ambience and most important of all, great coffee.

Morning Glory in Prague

When visiting Prague, the first thing you will notice is the absolute oceans of tourists and crowds visiting the town center. Many (us included) will undoubtedly find this extremely intimidating and off-putting as it takes away from the beauty of it all. So I had a great idea:

“what if I was to visit the crowded Town Square and the suffocating Charles Bridge just as the sun was rising?”

The idea is simple – tourists and travellers alike form the majority of the crowd. They’re usually not keen to start the day early as they’re most likely taking it easy on vacation mode. Which is what makes the late morning – early evening rush so suffocating. So I wanted to see what it was really like without all the chaos. I’m happy to say the undisturbed beauty of Prague is unmatched. Here is a gallery of the pictures we took.

If you’re one of the lucky few who has visited and experienced Prague, I’m sure it is very easy to see the big difference an early morning stroll makes. A handful of hours later, this bridge would be shoulder to shoulder. Later in the afternoon, it would be a full on ocean crowd.

Poonhill Trek: What is required and costs

Hiking the Himalayas : Poonhill Mountains hold a certain magic – the towering behemoths have a tight grip on people’s hearts. People naturally just love the mountains. I am personally very guilty of this. Ever since I stepped foot in the Canadian Rockies , I became a victim amongst many others of its many charms.…

Deep in the Sumatran Jungle

Two Days One Night Jungle Buzz We knew Sumatra as a distant island from its more popular brothers Bali and Java; we knew it from its great coffee beans we often buy in Costco and from the critically endangered Orangutans that can be found deep in its jungles. After some research, we committed on a…
